Job Overview

This role provides an opportunity to work in SHL’s global IP team to partner the company’s cross-functional growth, technology and legal teams on IP matters. The IP Business Partner is responsible for IP matters relating to a segment of SHL’s business, from drafting and prosecuting patent applications (in cooperation with outside patent counsel) to ensuring freedom to operate (in conjunction with our FTO team based in Taiwan, and outside counsel where appropriate), and negotiating and advising on customer and partner agreements, licensing and portfolio reviews.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist with invention harvesting and prepare new patent applications
  • Manage patent prosecution, including responding to office actions from the European Patent Office (EPO) as well as providing detailed guidance to non-EPO associates for the preparation of responses to office actions also in other jurisdictions
  • Work autonomously to manage a portfolio of cases and associated prosecution deadlines, whilst also being able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within both the global IP team
  • Work alongside the FTO team in assessing and clearing FTO risks for products and projects, facilitating communication with relevant stakeholders
  • Prepare oppositions and observations by 3rd parties
  • Support IP enforcement, conflicts, and litigation, including cooperation and collaboration with other in-house and/or outside counsels, and including developing/driving strategy, gathering evidence, developing claim charts, developing positions, risk assessment, tracking deadlines, and advising stakeholders

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • An Engineering degree and broad-based interest in science and technology
  • A minimum of 2 years experience working as a (trainee) patent attorney in private practice or in-house, or as a patent engineer
  • Experience representing clients/employer directly before the European Patent Office, or supporting such activities
  • An ability to focus on the detail, as well as being able to see the bigger picture
  • Highly developed communication skills in English, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and concisely to stakeholders of different levels and specializations

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical experience in the field of medical devices
  • Experience with the IPFolio case management tool
  • Experience working with in a cross-cultural team
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, practices and procedures relating to patenting in Europe, US and Asia
  • Knowledge of German or Mandarin, verbal and written
