Advancing precision in intravitreal injection for pediatric ophthalmology
March 26 2026
In the March issue of ONdrugDelivery magazine, SHL Medical and Bayer jointly authored an article examining precision considerations in intravitreal injection for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treatment.
ROP is a disease of retinal vascular development affecting premature infants and may require intravitreal injection at extremely low dose volumes. At the microliter scale, even small deviations in delivered volume can translate into meaningful differences in administered dose. Conventional syringe-based approaches can exhibit variability at these volumes, presenting technical challenges for achieving consistent dosing accuracy in sensitive neonatal applications.
The article discusses how SHL Medical, in partnership with Bayer, leveraged its Micro Dosing Device (MDD) technology to enable fixed, microliter-scale delivery for intravitreal injection in preterm infants. Designed for reliable administration of the recommended 10 µL dose, the device integrates into established intravitreal injection workflows without fundamentally altering existing clinical practices.
